We are the first Penguins to visit Sarasota and the excitement that we have caused has been amazing, especially as we are endangered and there are not too many of us left in the world.

The holidays were fabulously crazy, with so many humans coming to visit, we are quite overwhelmed with happiness!

The 6-foot-tall gingerbread display will be unveiled to the public during a free grand opening at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 in the lobby of The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, which is located at 1111 Ritz-Carlton Drive. Visitors can see the display until Dec. 28.

This year's gingerbread artwork is themed "Winter Water Land" to honor the manatees, dolphins, fish, sea urchins and other colorful, playful creatures who live in the Gulf of Mexico. The black-footed penguins for Mote will be the only gingerbread animals in the display native to South Africa.

If you and your human family are coming to meet us at Mote Aquarium we thought that you might like to get to know us a bit.  We are African, black-footed penguins and our really posh Latin name is Spheniscus Demersus. People say that when we talk, we bray like donkeys and that's why they also call us  “jackass penguins.” Really!


We are very handsome, with have black stripes and spots on our chests and we have pink around our eyes, which keeps us cool. I bet you are wondering why we want to keep cool? That's because we come from the southwest coast of Africa and it can be quite warm there.


There really are not many of us left in the world and our species was even recently listed as endangered. That's why it's so nice to visit the kind people at Mote Aquarium who help penguins like us and other creatures from the seas.

Right next to our Penguin Island home, we decorated with beautiful banners and a huge dance floor where everyone boogied to a hip local band called The Boneshakers and there were even acrobats and stilt-walkers. We even shook a tail feather or two!

Well I knew that we were totally cool and even quite famous but I was totally moved (in a penguin way) by my huge portrait on the pavement downtown.

Check me out - I am HUGE outside of Whole Foods, downtown Sarasota! Thanks to these talented Chalk Festival artists that created a real impression of my beautiful self.

We really enjoyed seeing the Mayor and Commissioners and business people from the town. The excitement made us really hungry and we ate lots of fish to celebrate.
